There will be a full moon in Japan tomorrow,
September 6, 2017!!!
So we were wanting to just give a brief explanation
of what a full moon really is,
and what it means to Japanese culture๐✨
๐What is a Full Moon?๐
When the Moon is full the entire face of the Moon is lit by the Sun's rays
and it can be bright enough to light up even the darkest of places.
Nights like tonight and the day after next,
the Moon often looks to be full
but only about 98% of the Moon's disc is illuminated.
Which makes it difficult to tell the difference between a Full Moon
and the last stage of a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐
or the beginning of a Waning Gibbous Moon. ๐

๐Japan's Moon Deity - TSUKUYOMI๐
No, it isn't Sailor Moon...though she is my deity!
At the center of Japanese mythology are the three heavenly siblings,
Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susano-o.
According to Japanese Shintoism,
Tsukuyomi, who is the Moon god, was born from the right eye of the primeval being Izanagi.
Tsukuyomi initially lived in the Heavens with his sister, the Sun god, Amaterasu.
But once, Amaterasu sent her brother as her representative
to the goddess of food, Uke Mochi.
To celebrate, the goddess of food offered him a wonderful meal, created from her mouth and nose. Tsukuyomi was so disgusted that he killed the goddess of food Uke Mochi.
When Amaterasu learned what her brother Tsukuyomi did,
she was so angry that she didn't want to see him anymore.
Since then, brother and sister have lived apart, alternating in the sky.
That is why the day always follows the night.
The sun goddess Amaterasu and the god of storms Susano-o are the most prominent.
The moon god Tsukuyomi on the other hand isn't so much.
However, for the longest time the Japanese have sensed the invisible power of the moon, and have paid careful attention to the rhythms of the lunar cycle.
The Japanese also followed the lunar calendar until the mid-19th century
which meant that most events and rituals depended on the phases of the moon!

๐ฐ๐Forget MAN on the Moon๐๐ฐ
In some Western cultures,
when you look up at the moon we say there's a man on the Moon.
Not in Asian though!
In Asia a rabbit is the symbol of the Moon.
So in Japanese art and decorations with a rabbit,
it's common to see a moon somehow incorporated.
But what is the rabbit doing on the Moon?
Well, in China, the rabbit is making medicine!๐ฐ๐
In Japan, the rabbit is pounding mochi (rice cakes)!
For that reason you can see buy cakes
with a rabbit motif for the autumn moon-viewing season
at traditional shops all throughout Japan.
